When one thinks of a Ministry, an image of power, precision, mandate and authority conjures up in the mind.
But if you come to Maldives and see the Ministry (any Ministry for that matter), you will be left wondering if you are dreaming or being shell shocked by a deluge of incongruities. The Ministry is just a building of one or two stories, with people sitting/standing/chatting in there with their usual attire (vide infra), not bothered about any foreigner/doctor/paramedical staff politely making an inquiry or waiting for them at their desk. Each individual seems to be in their own bubble.
There is no respect given to the doctor/paramedical staff. We are treated like bonded laborer. The method to differentiate us from bonded labour is that doctors wear shoes and ties, where as nurses wear uniform. The treatment/attitude meeted out to us is as good or as bad as they treat any labourer. I am not demeaning labourers. i believe in Dignity of Labour. Better to be a labourer who earns his money by honest work than being a Maldivian who drugs himself and begs/robs money from innocent foreigners.
Please do not be surprised if the people in the Ministry do not bother or care if you have a genuine problem.
The people/authorities in the Ministry have a few specified jobs
a) frame rules on a daily basis which are adverse to the foreigners
b) create situations is such a manner that even the author of the best selling crime thriller would wonder how the plot of the Ministry could be thicker than his.
c) When asked to explain the rules, pass the buck to some unknown person who is virtually inaccessible.
d) Stomp you foot, thump you fist on the table and force all the foreign staff to obey the rules OR penalize them if they don't.
I will explain all these in separate posts. Parting statement - Ministry is filled with a bunch of Maldivians (to be read as - a bunch of good for nothing crooks) whose main aim is to usurp as much of money as they can from the foreigners and then torture the foreigners to satisfy their sadistic cravings. Do not expect anything good from them. In case, they do help you - TAKE IT AS A BONUS! THANK GOD THAT IT HAPPENED! Do not give an iota of credit to these Ministry fellows.
